​Waynesboro Mayor Richard Johnson visited with people living in the community homes operated by Ellisville State School in Wayne County recently. After giving the group an update on exciting things happening in Waynesboro, Mayor Johnson signed a proclamation declaring March as “Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month” in the city.

The proclamation acknowledged that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities “share the same desires as other Mississippians including goals in education, meaningful work, and an independent community life.”

Johnson stated, “We appreciate everything you do. Waynesboro tries to work as a team for the city. You all have been a big part of the community.”

​Many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are achieving independence, productivity and integration in their respective communities. Each year activities and events are held during the month of March to promote awareness of people with disabilities and focus on their accomplishments and abilities as they contribute to their communities.

Waynesboro is among the many cities, organizations, and agencies across the state and country that observe National Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The goal is to bring awareness to the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to help others understand the challenges often faced by those living with an intellectual or developmental disability who strive to be fully included in society.
