Carter Wins Top Honor as ESS Direct Support Employee of the Year
Moselle resident Jeffery Carter was named Ellisville State School’s “2016 Direct Support Employee of the Year” during a special ceremony held recently.
Carter was among a group of over 50 ESS employees who were chosen as Employee of the Month winners in 2016. Out of this group, several were chosen to receive honors for work in their respective departments and Carter was selected as the overall winner. Other winners receiving honors were Curtis Trotter, Heidelberg; Shelia McCann, Laurel, and Mekedes Coleman, Ellisville. Each winner received a plaque and prizes from program sponsors.

In announcing Carter to the audience, ESS Director Rinsey McSwain said, “This employee is always willing to provide for the needs of the people that we serve and volunteers his time to help fellow co-workers as well.”
Carter was surprised to hear his name called as the overall winner for the year. “I can’t believe it,” he said. “It’s a great honor.”
A member of Eastabutchie Baptist Church, Carter said, “I pray and ask the Lord to help me do my job and carry out my programs. I enjoy working with the people we serve and will do whatever it takes to put a smile on their faces.”
Paris Hopson, president of the ESS Family and Friends Association, which helps sponsor the recognition program, thanked the direct support employees for all they do to care for their loved ones.

“It takes a very special person to do what you do,” she said. “You are here caring for our loved ones and being there for them when we cannot.
“I want you to know how much I and the other members of the group thank you,” she continued. “We really love and appreciate you all.”
Ellisville Mayor Tim Waldrup and Steve Allen, Deputy Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, were also in attendance and thanked the employees for their service.
“You make a difference in peoples’ lives,” said Allen. “I appreciate all you do.”
